Russian state media company VGTRK, which owns and operates the country’s main national TV stations, has fallen victim to a targeted cyber attack claimed by the Ukrainian government to be orchestrated by hackers based in Kyiv. The attack, which occurred on the 7th of October, caused the company’s website and its 24-hour news live stream to become inaccessible.
A Ukrainian government source claimed Ukrainian hackers were responsible for the incident, saying that Ukrainian hackers “congratulated” Putin on his birthday by carrying out a large-scale attack on the television and radio broadcasting company.
The cyberattack seems to have targeted the online and internal services of VGTRK, which also owns and operates radio stations and many regional TV channels.
Reuters has cited sources saying that they heard the hackers wiped everything from the servers, including backups, forcing employees to work in lockdown since the early hours of this morning.
The exact circumstances and extent of the attack are yet to be revealed.
